First Time in Helsinki: A One-Day City Guide
Central Helsinki is compact and walkable. This route covers the city’s best-known places in one day – mostly on foot.
Morning: Senate Square and Market Square
Start at Senate Square, dominated by Helsinki Cathedral. From there it is a short walk to Market Square on the waterfront, with views over the harbour and archipelago.
Midday: Suomenlinna
The sea fortress of Suomenlinna is a short ferry ride from Market Square. The HSL ferry is part of public transport, so an HSL ticket is valid. Allow at least a couple of hours and wear good shoes.
Check departures Ferry timetables change with the seasons. See live departures in the HSL journey planner.
Afternoon: the Esplanade and city centre
Back on the mainland, walk along Esplanadi park towards the centre. You will find cafés, shops and restaurants along the way. For daily events, see MyHelsinki.
